Mike Pain

Mike Pain is a multi-award winning sports photographer who has been in the game for over 25 years. He has photographed the Olympics, Ryder cup, Football and Rugby World Cups and many more top sports events. He was Chief Sports Photographer for the Mail On Sunday. He was named sports photographer of the year in 2005 and 2011 and also awarded the Olympic Photographer Of The Year in 2012. He is a Nikon UK Ambassador.

This image captures Harry Kane celebrating his 94th minute winner vs Slovenia in a game that he captained. Also in the image is Jordan Henderson who is England’s usual captain. I like the fact that Kane and Henderson are in focus while the background is blurred. I also like how he captured them with their fists clenched celebrating as I feel like it helps show more emotion. There is surprisingly high key lighting for a night game and the floodlights shine down perfectly on Harry Kane. The image is cropped well enough with no unneeded space. When I first look at the picture I see Harry Kane and then Jordan Henderson which is what Pain wants you to see.

This image is from the 2010 World Cup game England vs USA that ended in a 1-1 draw. England took the lead through Steven Gerrard in the 4th minute before Rob Green (pictured above) had a howler and a long range attempt from Clint Dempsey slipped through his fingers. I again like the blurred background, I feel like if you didn’t know the context of this image then the reception of this image would be different. I feel like the photo could have done with being a little less cropped as then we could see the football in the back of the net.

In my work I will use the blurred background technique that Mike Pain uses with his work.

Michael Regan

Michael Regan primarily photographs football as that is where his passion lies. He works closely with the FA and became the in house photographer for the England senior squad. He also works with Getty Images. Regan has covered three world cups, 4 Euros, many champions league finals and even photographed at 5 Wimbledon events which he has said is his favourite to capture. He was selected in the Getty Images team that were covering the 2012 Olympics. He has worked with Adidas, Nike and FIFA.

This picture captured by Regan is of John Terry (then Chelsea captain) with his head buried after slipping while taking a penalty in the 2008 Champions League Final. In the background we see the Manchester United players crowded around. I don’t like the fact that he chose to keep them out of focus and I think it would have been better to keep them in focus to see the conflicting emotions. I also don’t like the vignette surrounding the image as it makes everything dark and in my opinion degrades the image. I like how vibrant the red shirts are in the background.

I will not be using a vignette in my own work like Regan often does.
